Kitchen Remodel Cost in California

Kitchen Remodel Cost in California

The same kitchen calculator as the national version, pre-set to California (BEA parity 110.7, +10.7% vs national) — with California-specific permit and timeline notes below. Enter your size and scope for a state-adjusted estimated range.

Typical kitchens run about 70–200 sq ft. A standard 10×12 kitchen is 120 sq ft.

State: California (this page is pre-set to California; the national calculator lets you pick any state).

Optional. If your ZIP is covered by the local index (26,265 ZIPs), the California estimate is adjusted by a local cost index built from free public data (county construction wages + HUD rents + Zillow home values). This is an index/proxy, NOT contractor pricing. Unknown ZIPs fall back to the state estimate — no factor is invented.

Please enter a kitchen size between 20 and 2,000 sq ft.

How this estimate works

  1. Start with a published national range. Your kitchen size puts you in a size band (small: under 70 sq ft; medium: 70–150 sq ft; large: over 150 sq ft). The national range for your band and scope comes from Renovation Guide HQ’s 2026 kitchen cost guide, which uses Angi’s 2026 project-scope tiers from 13,100 verified projects.
  2. Material quality positions you inside the range. Stock points to the lower third, semi-custom to the middle third, custom to the upper third. For major remodels the top of the range is open-ended (shown with a “+”), because layout changes make the ceiling depend on the house.
  3. State adjustment: national range × (state price parity ÷ 100). The parity is the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) all-items Regional Price Parity for the state, reference year 2024 (US = 100).
  4. Item-wise breakdown. The breakdown splits the adjusted range using the shares of the kitchen guide’s own published mid-range worked example (subtotal $32,500: cabinets $6,500; countertops $4,200; appliances $6,000; flooring $2,200; carpentry + general labor $5,000; plumbing + electrical $3,500; backsplash, sink, demo and paint $4,300; permits $800). It is a model allocation for comparison, not a contractor’s line items.
  5. Contingency is shown separately. The guide recommends holding 10–20% on top of any quote for surprises behind walls.
What the state adjustment does not do. The BEA parity covers all consumer spending statewide — it is not a remodeling-labor index and it averages very different cities together. It deliberately understates big-city contractor rates. A San Francisco or Manhattan quote can legitimately sit well above the state-adjusted range; a rural quote can sit below it. Always calibrate with local quotes.

District of Columbia: the 50-state BEA table used here publishes no DC parity in the same vintage, so DC shows the national range, labeled as such — no multiplier was invented for it.

About California:
  • Price level: California’s BEA all-items parity is 110.7 (US = 100), so the state-adjusted range runs about 10.7% above the national range.
  • Permit review: big coastal cities including Los Angeles run 4–12+ weeks for plan review (RGH kitchen timeline guide) — submit paperwork while materials are on order, never after.
  • Metro warning: a San Francisco quote can legitimately sit well above even this state-adjusted range (RGH kitchen guide). Treat a high Bay Area quote as normal, not as proof of overcharging, and compare itemized quotes.

Try the worked example: 120 sq ft, midrange scope, semi-custom materials — the calculator applies California’s 110.7 parity (+10.7% vs national) to the national range automatically.

ZIP-level local index (optional). Enter a ZIP code to refine the state estimate with a local cost index built only from free public data: 40% BLS county construction wages (QCEW 2024 annual, NAICS 23, private, county average annual pay), 30% HUD FY2025 Small Area Fair Market Rents (2-bedroom, by ZIP), and 30% Zillow ZHVI (September 2026, ZIP level). Each component is turned into a factor from its national percentile (0.5 + percentile, so the median scores 1.00); the ZIP factor is the ZIP index divided by the state index, clamped to 0.75–1.50, with the raw value always shown. The national table covers 26,265 ZIPs; where a ZIP’s county has no reported BLS wage (1,386 ZIPs), the index uses 50% HUD / 50% Zillow and says so. Unknown ZIPs get no invented factor — the state estimate stands. This is an index/proxy, NOT contractor pricing and NOT RSMeans data. Six ZIPs are also embedded in the page as an offline fallback if the table cannot load.
